Our client is a small growing company in the real estate lending and development space in the Washington, DC metro area and has retained Evolve Partners to identify a Chief Financial Officer/Experienced Controller who can be a key member of the Executive Team.


Overview: This role is to be the heartbeat of the company’s finances and operations. The Chief Financial Officer will report to the Owner and will be a key member of the Executive Team. He/She will assume a strategic role in the overall management of the organization, working closely with the Owner in overseeing and growing its business lines. The CFO will build-out the finance and accounting team to support and ensure financial integrity in day to day operations of the businesses. The CFO will have primary responsibilities for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all financial activities both internally and externally. To successfully occupy this position, the candidate should be an experienced finance leader and possess direct experience as a CFO, Controller or similar and have thorough knowledge or direct experience in construction accounting. FinTech experience will be highly beneficial to assist in new business line. The CFO will not only manage all aspects of the company’s finances but also partner with the Owner to contribute to broad business decisions and act as an operational leader as well.


Desired Skills and Experience:


  • Finance or accounting experience with Private Equity, FinTech, Real Estate (Ideally Home Building and/or Construction)
  • “Big picture” capability combined with experience of “in the trenches” of the debits and credits, plus the ability to close monthly books, analyze the results, etc.;
  • Thorough understanding of commercial and residential real estate lending, and construction preferred;
  • Thorough grasp of book and tax reporting to third party investors, banks and LLCs/partnerships among multiple entities and business lines;
  • Ability to manage books between GAAP and tax basis.
  • Adept and systematic at researching and reconciling complex transactions;
  • QuickBooks experience REQUIRED with ability to implement and oversee transition to new software as needed.
  • Experience in a small business and growing environment required.




  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the general ledger of all companies and projects.
  • Develop and manage process and systems for cost control on development projects.
  • Develop and manage the cash requirements and working capital needs.
  • Oversee and manage Director of Operations.
  • Oversee and manage the loan servicing functions.
  • Oversee and manage the Investor Relations activity. Including developing a process for investor communications and timely and monthly updates to Investors. Together with the IR support, manage the investor communications.
  • Oversee the monthly reconciliation of all reserve accounts, loans outstanding, investor accounts, lines of credit, bank loans and construction draws;
  • Preparing various financial analyses for presentation to executive management;
  • Prepare and oversee the completeness of monthly and yearly financial reporting for all companies. Create a consolidated set of financials.
  • Developing and monitoring internal controls
  • Direct decisions surrounding operational needs within budget. Determine hiring needs to manage growth and support.
  • Take the lead and active role in the arrangement of financing needs for the company and projects.
  • Preparing budgets and analyses, as needed
  • Recommending changes in financial policies and procedures, as necessary
  • Preparing cost accounting reports and other interim reports as needed
  • Planning and implementing changes in the accounting systems, as necessary


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, MBA and/or CPA highly preferred
  • 10+ years’ progressive financial experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role
  • Relevant industry experience in banking, mortgage, real estate, specialty finance business, construction, and/or FinTech.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and proven leadership skills: willingness to build and foster strong professional relationships across all functional areas of the business
  • Strong thought leadership, strategic business acumen, and intellectual curiosity
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Excellent knowledge of data analytics, maintaining metrics and forecasting methods
  • Proven ability to perform complex data analysis and provide structured conclusions to all levels of management
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize across multiple projects
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal; ability to tailor messaging and communicate effectively across all levels
  • Proficient in QB and Microsoft Office, specifically Excel. ABS Software helpful.
